Both are by-products of crude oil and are used predominantly as motor fuel for diesel engines, such as, tractor trailers, agricultural equipment and generators.

On road diesel is used by transportation vehicles that travel any state highway and is subject to state and federal fuel taxes.

Off road diesel is used by farmers and construction equipment and is not subject to fuel taxes because of the non-highway use
